And a fun time was had by all...

Tonight the kids and I went to a community hero party at a local school. Ian's speech therapist had told us about it and it was for any family with an infant, toddler or preschooler and older kids were welcome to come too. We had a great time even though it was different than I originally thought it would be. I thought it would be a meet and greet with fire fighters and plice officers. What it ended up being was more of a community resources fair.

When we got there we were assigned a color and that was our schedule for the night. First we got to eat a free dinner of sandwiches, fruit and veggies. We also got to look at 5 different displays and get free hand outs. Two of them were giving away free books. Ian got a Bob the Builder board book at one and at the other I picked a big hardcover book filled with about 20 classic kids stories with the classic illustrations.

Then we moved on to Live Music, which was being performed by a guy that I had worked with back when I taught. He played his guitar and we sang all the classic kids songs (Wheels on the Bus, Old McDonald, etc). He even played his alto and soprano saxophones for us.

Next we went to the art room where the kids could make bookmarks and spring crowns out of paper plates. Ian loved the book marks, but threw a fit about the hats until suddenly he changed his mind and tromped on over and made a wonderful hat. The ladies at the table even commented on how he was holding the crayon the proper way and how intent he was on gluing the spring shapes on.

After that there were some health related stations. Alison got her eyes checked and the woman there said that her eyes were fine (yay!). We were in line for a hearing test, but she decided not too. Which was ok with me since we know that if anything she is hyper-sensitive to sounds anyway. At one of the stations they were giving away more free books. They both got copies of Carnival of the Animals which also has a cd of the music from the musical, Backyardigans coloring books (one of my fav kids tv shows), free toothbrushes and full size kids toothpastes (and Ian's toothbrush has a car on it!). Plus they were giving parents a book called The Fairy Tale Cookbook it has fun recipes that go with lots of popular kids stories (many of which are in the book that I got).

Our last stop was the story room where the storyteller acted out and used the flannel board to tell a few stories.

We had a great time and we'd definately go back next year.
